Mental Health Warning Signs. Symptoms of mental disorders vary depending on the type and severity of the condition. Some general symptoms that may suggest a mental illness include: In adults. Confused thinking. Long-lasting sadness or irritability. Extremely high and low moods. Excessive fear, worry, or anxiety.
The American Psychological Association suggests that common signs of a mental health crisis include dramatic shifts in sleep habits, sudden changes in mood, withdrawal from normal activities, decreased performance at school or work, neglect of personal hygiene and changes in weight.
Another common barrier to mental health care is inability to pay for treatment due to financial hardship or lack of health insurance. Not having reliable transportation, child care issues and appointments for treatment that conflict with work or school schedules can also prevent someone from engaging in treatment.
The most general, but also most common early sign of mental illness is, simply, unusual behavior. This can manifest in many ways. Mood changes including wild shifts in emotions, anxious or depressive behavior, apathy toward people and activities or withdrawal from social or sports activities can signal that something is wrong.
