This is a discussion paper which raises more questions than answers and is timely with the focus on quality in healthcare, particularly now as Ireland prepares for a general election for a new government with healthcare a priority issue.
The healthcare system in Ireland is considered to be a comprehensive system with a public health service funded by the government and an expanding private health care service.
Individuals who are resident in Ireland for at least one year are entitled to receive health care through the public healthcare system managed by the Health Service Executive (HSE). Ireland’s expenditure on healthcare as a share of GDP amounted to seven percent in 2018.
Ireland is no different to most other countries in the challenges it faces in the current economic downturn. The challenge will be to deliver accessible, high quality and equitable health services to those who need them, when and where they need them within available resources.
