The SF-36 is a generic measure of health, which includes a reliable short measure on mental health both from the illness aspect (MHI-5, distress) and well-being aspect (vitality), and a measure of role limitation due to emotional reasons (disability).
Of the many different types of mental health services available, perhaps the most likely to be encountered are therapy and other forms of counseling, psychiatry, hospital programs, and social work programs designed to intervene, particularly when children are abused.
The effects of mental illness have physical, social, and financial implications. Depression, outbursts of frustration, and excessive stress can lead to a weakened immune system and increased risk of heart attack and coronary disease. Mentally ill individuals often experience financial difficulties due to the inability to sustain employment.
"Mental healing" emphasizes the interpenetration of what are usually called "mind" and "body" and makes use of the power of thought to affect the body. In the worldview of mental healing, people's deeply-held thoughts make them ill or at least create the preconditions for disease and psychological problems.
