Pender's Health Promotion Model The Health Promotion Model was designed by Nola J. Penderto be a “complementary counterpart to models of health protection.” It defines health as a positive dynamic state rather than simply the absence of disease. Health promotion is directed at increasing a patient’s level of well-being.
Pender believed that the goal of nursing care was to help patients achieve optimal health and well-being. The model was created following Pender’s work examining health promoting and preventative behaviours.
Also, Pender was an Associate Dean for Research at the University of Michigan School of Nursing from 1990 to 2001. And as a co-founder of the Midwest Nursing Research Society, she has served as a trustee of its foundation since 2009. Pender is presently a Professor Emeritus at Michigan State University.
In this report, the author analyzes a modified version of this framework. In this case, the Pender model will be used to educate patients on their health and on how to use their current conditions to influence others to take up preventive measures.
