From 1972 to 1978, the Los Angeles County Department of Health (now the Department of Health Services) provided the full continuum of physical, mental and public health services and functions.
While patients covered by L.A. Care have access to some doctors in private practice, many get care through the county-owned, safety-net hospital system that includes the Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center in Boyle Heights, Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance and Olive View-UCLA Medical Center in Sylmar.
However, despite many refuting Ferrer’s assessment, including the LA County Chief Medical Examiner, who called it “media hype,” others still support the County’s public health department, with businesses now bracing for a return of the mandate.
On January 13, 2015, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors publicly directed the Chief Executive Office to assess the feasibility of consolidating the county\'s three health departments into a single unified health agency.
