Hospice and Palliative Care. Hospice and palliative care agencies often face barriers and challenges similar to other healthcare services in rural areas. These challenges can include workforce shortages; recruitment and retention programs; reimbursement issues; limited access to broadband; and others.
A new poll by NPR, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health found that one out of every four people living in rural areas said they couldn\'t get the health care they needed recently. And about a quarter of those said the reason was that their health care location was too far or difficult to get to.
Shifting gears, Thomas Morris, MPA, from the Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA) of HHS, explained that, historically, rural health policy has typically focused on the financial and workforce aspects of rural clinics and hospitals, which is a proxy for the larger concern: access to care.
Urban areas frequently draw potential healthcare professionals away from rural areas. Students in rural communities may have to travel or relocate to an urban area for health professions coursework, unless they can find degree programs offered online, or for clinical training.
