The Detroit Health Department food safety unit licenses and inspects over 1,900 food establishments. The goal of these inspections is to prevent foodborne illness and ensure that safe food is being served to the public.
If you believe that food served by a Detroit food establishment caused you or a family member to become ill, was prepared, handled, or stored in unclean conditions, or broke food safety laws in some other way. Any person or business that is preparing or serving food to the public needs a State Food Service License.
“Ensuring the safety of Michigan’s food supply is paramount,” said Gary McDowell, director of the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. “Consumers should be able to shop with confidence that a business has met sanitation and safety requirements and is providing them a safe product.”
If everything is found to be in compliance with the Michigan Food Law and Food Code, approval to begin operating will be given. You will then receive a routine inspection approximately every 6 months. A plan review must be submitted to the Detroit Health Department and approved before construction can begin.
