Simply put : COBRA is expensive because the insurance policy is expensive. When you are working for a company the employees generally pay a portion of the cost of the health insurance and the employer pays the bulk of the insurance.
COBRA provides a good option for keeping your employer-sponsored health benefits temporarily. The cost can be high, but if you have some savings in an HSA, that can help offset your costs. Make an informed decision by looking at all your options during the 60-day enrollment period, and don't focus on the premium alone.
According to the Department of Labor, COBRA rates should still be less expensive than free market private insurance rates. However, you should still shop around: If your employer presents you with COBRA after a layoff or termination, make sure the cost is not higher than something you might find on the market.
Not all companies can offer COBRA continuation just like all companies can’t offer health insurance. Employers who have 20 or more employees are required to offer COBRA, but if you work for a small business, the chances of continuing your health coverage are slim.
